You marking me, Mate?

ocean-55

You marking me?

That is what the athletic Australian dude said to me in the pool – He said it again, or more like half-yelled it with a little disbelief and disdain thrown in – “You marking me?”

“For as long as I can”  I finally answered and my mind raced around the track of how I got here.

Here is:  Playing a game of football in a pool in Cancun. This did not seem possible – I mean regular people don’t go to Cancun – We go to *Hampton Beach or some other dinky-little-past- its-prime tourist ghetto. We upgrade from McDonald’s to Red Robin and think we are living the dream.

We don’t end up in a pool in Mexico trying to out-swim an Australian—especially one with twenty less years and thirty less pounds of body fat on him.  I think by “marking him”, he means “covering him” – which is indeed what I am trying to do because his team is destroying my team.

This madness must stop – I am going to give it all I got. I could not “mark” him for too long, but at least he went back to his section of the pool.

And my mind is still racing.

Two week-long hospital stays for me with the last one including major surgery since this trip was booked.

There was also about three weeks of recent on and off hospital time for my wife – waiting until two days before we leave before the doctor gives his blessing on the trip. She was in real bad shape only a month ago. We must be insane to leave the United States at a time like this.

We were insane – this is not practical- this is not a good choice.

And we are not financially secure enough to do this: we are just at the point that we are starting to turn the tide – instead of the wolf barking at the door – he is out in the drive-way yelping. But he ain’t going away for a few years yet, even if we stay on track.

What will our neighbors think? – What will our family think?

We should be home and miserable.

This is insane.

My wife simply stated that we have no idea what the future will bring and that we have never been anywhere tropical and that her one wish for this family is we do that please-and that we do it now, while we still can.

So that is how I found myself on the blue team for gametime in a pool in Cancun. We got shellacked by the red team by the way. I mean – you must be crazy to try an’ out-swim an Australian, right?

Yeah, we were crazy.

And we still are.

Thanks to my wife for making us take the best vacation this family has ever had.

Rule of Thirds Challenge – My new best friend in Mexico

https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/rule-of-thirds/

fred-wp33

From “The Cave” on location in Mexico.

This guy would visit us each day at poolside and we named him “Fred”.

Like many of my WordPress friends: I have no idea what his or her real name is or even if he is a him or a her. But always happy for the visit.

Why?

Because he/she gives me a unique iguana perspective that makes me think, smile and feel better.

And he doesn’t have to do anymore than he does to get that reaction. In this case; just crawl out and grab a little sun to warm up in the morning.

Just like my favorite bloggers – making the internet a better place by doing what they do.

The lesson here is “be yourself and enjoy being yourself” – because that gives others the courage to enjoy being themselves as well.

I love Mexico.

Cheers and viya con dios from the cave.

Photo Challenge – Scale

https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/scale/

as-the-crow-flies2

OK, I admit to a cheap re-heat of an oldie – but almost nobody saw this post when first published and it fits the challenge so well.

From the top of White Face Mountain is my big backyard called “The Adirondack Park”.

I am thinking that I may be “coming out” to the blogging world as a photographer — please forgive me – it is starting to happen and I can’t stop it.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Depth

I went classic perspective with train tracks – I admit to Photoshop because … well … there will be Photoshop in everything I do …especially for making a simple point about keeping a clear path in murky times. Focusing on the tracks instead of the landscape tends to clear things up.

perspective-2

I turned around to capture the sun rising through the trees – and, yes again — I over-saturated and blurred my way to a respectable image – This is my take on “can’t see the forest for the trees” – which is a stretch for a perspective challenge —– But — Both  these themes are strong mantras to me right now – so I share them with you.

After looking at work by talented photographers around WordPress – I almost did not hit the publish button – but then this whole blogging deal is about putting down what we are and getting on a trajectory for improvement. I need to set the stones down in order to step on them and move forward.

And this is all for fun anyway, right?

Cheers from the cave!

Hozier – Wondier or Wankier?

When I first heard “Take me to Church” – I completely lost it – “What is this crap spewing forth from my new favorite radio station?”

And it kept spewing:

It made the song of the day

It made the song of the week

It made the friggin’ song of the year

Hozier is the anointed saint of music for 2014 and I hate this song!!!!

hate-this-song

A hymn about sex – and it is not subtle

Not even a little bit

It blends two things that don’t blend well in a clunky and brutal manner – like say — one of those weird Japanese desert flavors.

Grab two scoops of == Whale Shark Ice Cream ==

I love Whale Sharks – soothingly beautiful giants gently coasting in pristine blue tropical waters —- and who doesn’t like ice cream?

But together? – I get a reaction like I get from this song. It is a queasiness in my spirit.

And this fish is not even cooked – just chopped up and mixed in.

Yuck!  Stop it!

I hate this song and all it stands for.

And now for something completely different:

Angel of Small Death & the Codeine Scene – Hozier

This is soulful and rich. It has nodes of gospel and blues. It is intense – this dude is from Memphis, right?

No—-Ireland? —- And it is that same guy who perpetrated the gratuitous crime of a song detailed at the start of this post?

Huh?

Color me with a big ol’ paintbrush of converted to this beat.

This is a great song.

Yes, it mixes genres up – but the blend is tasty this time around.

This is ===Raspberry Swirled Vanilla with a Chocolate drizzle === [or whatever epic flavor you want to add].

Bitter raspberry on cool vanilla with quality rich cocoa – does not get better than this.

Cheers from the Cave!

Notes on the title for this post:

Wondier is “Wonder” with that Hozier “i” added. (I know, hilarious wordplay)

Wankier is “Wanker” with that Hozier “i” added. For further explanation of the word “Wanker” – I suggest you move to England or simply watch “Spinal Tap” —in fact, everyone should watch Spinal tap at least once every 5 years to remind themselves of the beauty and tragedy with humor in all of rock music.

Dire Straits.Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet

I recently took a little stroll around the WP neighborhood and hit a post about Dire Straits Making Movies – http://80smetalman.wordpress.com/2014/05/22/great-rock-albums-of-1981-dire-straits-making-movies/ – It caught my attention for a couple reasons: I like this entire record and it hides my sentimental favorite from Mark Knopfler.

This one always stops me in my tracks.

I am like that deer on the side of the busy highway – just standing there – the sound and speed wash over me.

I am still

(Up here in the wild Northeast – this is a common sight— not me having a “time stop” moment when a song plays—but the bit about seeing a deer standing patiently on the side of the road.)

*Anyway – I digress much so back to the post at hand.

Last night I am driving and from out of the blue – this song plays on the radio – this song never plays on the radio. You might hear “Sultans of Swing” or “Money for Nothing” – but not this.

It still works

Yep, defenseless fawn me watching all the big metal boxes on wheels and nothing I can do.

I am stupefied from the first little guitar pluck.

He nails that fated to fail with loaded dice romance thing beautifully —- he takes us with him — so we can all ride in the leaky love boat and sink in the lake of the human condition.

All of us know this lake – it is a short ride around the corner – the bar next to it always full of desperate patrons, who, after drinking two more than they should.

Will hum this tune

Great song

Cheers from the cave!

2014 in review

Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you! To everyone that took time to visit “The Cave” this year.

The “Dancing Post” that had me trending up in the top sites on WP that day (my Birthday) was bittersweet. (I can not go back and read it, it is too much for me to take) —- and to have total strangers approach me in real life about it was surreal. I just wrote from the heart on something I never wanted to write about.

A special thank-you to my top 5 commentators who I consider my close blogging friends, you make this journey of posting not just rewarding but also enjoyable…and on a further note—I don’t know why it has me not following Apple Pie- I have been there from the beginning! I am totally following you. 🙂

And to my other blogging friends who did not make the “top 5” — much love and respect to you too!

I think this is interesting to look at the nuts and bolts of our little worlds.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 11,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

The Gloaming. Samhradh Samhradh

The Gloaming

Connected

Part of this precious landscape of humanity

What you think it will be and what others tell you it will be

Is vapor

Added to the mist that rises above the path you are walking

There are lessons to be learned — learn them.

There is pain to be felt — feel it.

Walk out into that half-light

With your heart and your soul.

Walk in it and breathe it in.

This is your life and you need every step you can take.

That about sums up 2014 for me – Difficult is what many experience and many had deeper struggles than this blogger.

Mainly, what I take from this year to the next: stop wasting moments – stop living from accident to accident and move with purpose.

We choose how we feel and how we react-we choose what we carry and what we discard.

I love the mood and feel of this song. There is something about Irish music that bypasses the brain and connects directly to the soul.

I can’t understand the words but I understand the emotion.
