The Pixies.Where Is My Mind.

Funny how a song can haunt you- this song seems to be following me around like a little puppy that wants a walk. I have read much about the cultural low point that was the 1980’s; it wasn’t all Madonna and MTV.

And here is a song about swimming in the Caribbean with little fishes following you around.  But it’s not taken like a scuba diving song. It has that anthem of wasted youth about it- And for those of you that are currently in the wasted youth phase (lucky you)  and may not know about Kurt Cobain trying to make a song that sounded like the Pixies and ending up with a little ditty called “Smells Like Teen Spirit” …well that happened too- so I bring you some substance from the horrible decade that still paddles around pretty good for its age. The PixiesWhere Is My Mind.

  1. “The 80’s suck!” – me a few years ago

“Man, the 80’s were as diverse and perhaps even more so than any other decade. You’ve got your punk, your new wave, your commercial pop-dance, your Eno-electronica, your trash/death metal, your glossy arena rock, your alternative and god knows how many other genres that I’m not aware of. Finding something you like is truly not a hard job. So what if they didn’t play it on the radio? Doesn’t mean it’s not good.” – me now.

OK, I’m done ranting. Just my opinion on the decade and an answer to 12bar’s comment.

Regarding the Pixies, they’re a fantastic band to these years and my neighbours would probably have to agree with me (there ain’t nothing like a Pixies song played at full volume!!). ‘Where Is My Mind’ is the song that introduced me to the band (via the famous Fight Club scene) and still remains a favourite. Kim’s “oooh-s” backing vocals do the trick for me – they’re a fantastic touch.

    Nice article, by the way.

    1. Thank you for the comments! Always great when another passionate music fan visits the cave. This is what music blogging is all about…and I give 12 bar some leeway on the 80’s because his own blog is excellent and not everything is “got” by everyone in the same way. Love to hear why people love and hate the same music. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Well yeah, as I said in my my own blog, and on numerous other occasions, the 80s were a cultural wasteland mostly but certainly not all bad. I never got the Pixies though…

    1. I have kind of gone back to find them. I respect and like the music more today than I did at the time. This blog has got me working a little harder and listening with fresh ears. That is is good thing…funny how you can warm up to music that you dismissed before.

      1. Oh without a doubt. I’m listen to some stuff that I had totally dismissed before and really loving it and each time I listen to I think, how could I not have liked this… Mind you, it doesn’t happen that often…

  3. Hahaha! I like the way you said:”song seems to be following me around like a little puppy that wants a walk”. Now I can undrstand what you are talking about!!! 😀
